Did you know that there are multiple factors that determine the typical basement remodel timeline and process? That being stated, the process typically takes anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks from start to finish. Of course, the time frame may be extended based upon the size of the basement, scope of the project, and the amount of custom work that needs to be done. Once the design phase has been completed and the construction materials have been ordered and delivered the construction can begin. That starts with the framing phase.
In essence, the basement walls will start to go up and the room or rooms will begin to take shape. Framing typically takes anywhere from 3 to 5 days. Once the framing is complete, the rough work for electrical, plumbing and HVAC can begin. The electricians will rough in the lighting and other electrical components such as the outlet boxes and switches. They will also run electrical wire to the box locations. The plumbers will run the water line to the bathroom toilet, vanity, and shower, and kitchen sink. They will also run the water line to the wet bar if you’re having one installed.
The plumbers will also run the toilet and shower drain lines. Please note that if you are not adding a bathroom, kitchen, or wet bar then the plumbers are not needed for your remodeling project. If you’re having HVAC installed in your basement remodel, the HVAC company will rough in the vents at this time. The rough electrical, plumbing, and HVAC process takes anywhere from 3 to 5 days to complete. The contractor will then contact the building inspector to inspect the work.
In essence, the building inspector makes sure that all work is done properly and up to the standards as written in the state building code. The work can proceed from there once the building inspector signs off on the framing, electrical, plumbing and HVAC rough work. That typically takes one (1) day. The next phase is the insulation installation. Although that typically takes one day, it must also be inspected by the building inspector, which of course will take another day. When the insulation process is approved, the drywall installation can begin. The contractor will hang sheetrock starting on the ceiling and then the walls. This typically takes one (1) day to complete.
The next step is to tape and mud the seams. Three (3) coats of mud are usually applied. Each coat takes approximately a day to dry, which must take place before it’s sanded down and the next coat of mud can be applied. In total, the drywall phase typically takes five (5) days to complete from start to finish. When the drywall phase is complete the flooring is installed. That takes 1-3 days to complete depending on the flooring materials. Once the flooring is installed, the finish carpenters will trim out the project. That includes installing the door casings and doors, hanging any cabinetry, and installing the baseboard and trim. That can take anywhere from 2-5 days.
The next phase is interior painting. The process can take anywhere from 2 to 3 days. Once the painting is complete the flooring is installed, which is another 2 or 3 days. The finishing touches and touch up is another 2-3 days. At that point your basement remodel is complete.
